The Rep program offers the opportunity to play fastpitch softball at a higher level of competition than house league. In contrast to the co-ed house league, Rep teams are split by gender: Angels for the girls and Falcons for the boys.
It all depends on your perspective. There are varying reasons for making the decision to make the jump to a Rep softball team. It might be as simple as noticing some attributes in your child; perhaps he/she just "can't wait" for the next ball game, or perhaps he/she has improved dramatically over last season and now seems more skilled than many of the other players. Playing on a Rep team can be a fun and rewarding experience. Your child will be challenged by playing higher calibre softball teams and may sense more accomplishment in their successes. Due to the fact that equal competition may be difficult to find around the city - typically Rep teams will enter weekend tournaments (in or out-of-town) to provide them with the opportunity to play higher skilled softball teams.
Well - it all depends on the coaches and the division you are playing in. For instance a Bantam "A" team will likely have more strict criteria than a Squirt "B" team. Some commonalities amongst selection criteria include:
One reason for this is due to lack of a dedicated coach. Typically, it is a parent of a dedicated and skilled player who steps up to coach a Rep team. This isn't always the case though. For instance the '94 Angels Midget team is coached by Chuck McNutt. Chuck does not have a daughter on the team but is a dedicated and highly skilled coach working on reaching his NCCP level 3 certification.
The other reason some divisions are not represented is due to lack of skilled or dedicated players. In this case, we are at the mercy of "demographics" rather than lack of volunteers. In some years, there just aren't enough players to field both a Rep team without severely affecting the quality of the house-league program.
So far the only divisions represented for 2011 are Midget, Pee Wee and Squirt. Coach contact information can be found be following the links to the left to the particular rep division for which you are interested.
